Oldest Fossils Aren’t

first_imgA new analysis of the world’s oldest claimed fossil rock, a banded deposit off the coast of Greenland said to be 3.8 billion years old, probably contains no signature of life, reports Stephen Moorbath (Oxford) in Nature.1  He has visited the Akilia site twice where rocks were purported to contain graphite of biological origin.  He couldn’t find it. This persuasive discovery seems an almost inevitable, yet highly problematic, consequence to the increasing scientific doubts about the original claim.  We may well ask what exactly was the material originally analysed and reported?  What was the apatite grain with supposed graphite inclusions that figured on the covers of learned and popular journals soon after the discovery?  These questions must surely be answered and, if necessary, lessons learned for the more effective checking and duplication of spectacular scientific claims from the outset.    To my regret, the ancient Greenland rocks have not yet produced any compelling evidence for the existence of life by 3.8 billion years ago. (Emphasis added in all quotes.)Add to that the downgrading of claims about life-signatures in Western Australian rocks said to be 3.5 billion years old, and there is a big gap until the more reliable claims of bacterial fossils in Ontario’s Gunflint formation said to be 1.9 billion years old.  “ To have a chance of success,” he warns, “it seems that the search for remnants of earliest life must be carried out on sedimentary rocks that are as old, unmetamorphosed, unmetasomatized and undeformed as possible.  That remains easier said than done.”1Stephen Moorbath, “Palaeobiology: Dating earliest life,” Nature 434, 155 (10 March 2005); doi:10.1038/434155a.This admission does nothing to help the Darwinists.  Even trusting the shaky dating methods for the sake of argument, it adds to the problem that life appeared suddenly in a profusion of forms.  Moorbath has just robbed his fellow Darwinists of half their allotted practice time for bacteria to hone their engineering skills.  Those bacteria must have had to race extra fast to invent all the molecular machines needed for the higher organisms that followed.  To add to the Darwinists’ woes, the microbiologists are finding evidence of sophistication in the most “primitive” forms of life (see next entry).  A cartoon of a man’s head in a vice comes to mind.    Did you catch the line that a claim was made without sufficient evidence, yet was featured on the covers of “learned and popular journals”?  Could that be happening today?  Has anyone learned the lesson? 3 Things To Keep in Mind While Updating Your Demo Reel

first_imgAre you getting your demo reel ready for newer and bigger projects? Here are three considerations you should keep in mind when showcasing your work.As we head into another new year, cinematographers and DPs are taking inventory of the work they did last year. Despite the stock filmmakers take in their reels, the demo is an ever-changing currency. I talked to some directors and decision-makers about what they look for — or don’t — in a demo reel. Here’s their advice.Don’t Overestimate a Reel’s ImportanceDA Yirgou is a creative director, writer, photographer, and film director whose works include the LeBron James shortdoc “Long Live The King” for KITH and Nike. Yirgou’s visual style is a magical-but-hard-edged vantage that relishes nostalgia with light leaks and landscapes. This year he was named Creative Director of Matte Projects, a New York-based agency with clients like American Express, Christian Louboutin, and Alexander Wang. A reel isn’t as important to him when it comes to selling his own work or sizing up the work of others.“It used to be massive. A chance to show breadth,” Yirgou says. “But now it’s something I worry less about. There’s not enough time in between projects and work to really develop one every six months, if even that. Clients and production don’t keep up with portfolios in the traditional sense. It’s much easier for them to see your growth and activity through social.”Keep Your Collaborators in MindAmy Gardner is a sought-after artist and choreographer who’s worked with Madonna and Justin Bieber. She’s also an emerging director. Her first film to work on in that role, FUEL, called attention to the sculptural visions present in her body of film photography. Because Gardner works with filmstock — and her modern dance experiments sing in concert with specific camera choreo — there were high stakes when finding a director of photography for FUEL.She settled on Katelin Arizmendi, with whom she’d worked on a project for Kodak called “Girls on Film.”“I had been following and admiring her work for a while, and I had wanted to hire a female DP for FUEL, so I reached out. We met for coffee, and she was excited by the project, so we moved forward together,” Gardner says.“Truthfully, a reel isn’t the biggest component for me. I am more concerned about their taste and energy than their reel. I am also more concerned with how we connect, if we vibe on the same level and honor the same things.”Say Something SpecificCommunicate consistency in collected works, who you’re building relationships with, and how that’s all presented on social media, Yirgou says. Up-and-comers often cram disparate projects into their reel, which can drown out the voice they hope to cultivate.“I look for work that’s unique, representative of your style and aesthetic. That’s what immediately stands out when you have to review people you’re unfamiliar with,” Yirgou says. “Higher-profile brand work makes a quick statement on what your focus is, and if that is not 100 percent indicative of what you want to keep making, then it’s a disservice. If you don’t have the brand or paid work that shows off that vision, you have to invest in smaller projects — even if it’s just for your social, to make sure you’re getting seen for it.”Cover image via Amy Gardner.Looking for more film and video production tips and tricks? Kane leads Spurs’ recovery in 2-2 draw at Juventus

first_imgTyphoon Kammuri accelerates, gains strength en route to PH “We are a young team in this competition. To show that performance is to be proud and to congratulate the players because they were fantastic.”Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri reacted strongly afterward when it was suggested his team, which is going for a seventh successive Serie A title, should have beaten Spurs, which is fifth in the Premier League.“I think people have lost a bit of objectivity,” said a clearly annoyed Allegri. “Juve plays to win but it’s not favorite. You can’t go to the final every year. I think the lads are having a great season, but it’s a long leap from there to think they’re going to win a last-16 match 3-0.“That drives me nuts, because people don’t have an idea about the other teams. I can’t accept that people are getting depressed over a 2-2 draw, it seems like we lost 8-0.”It was also an exciting first half in Basel, with Manchester City scoring three goals before going on to win 4-0 to leave it with one foot in the quarterfinals.ADVERTISEMENT Read Next Globe Business launches leading cloud-enabled and hardware-agnostic conferencing platform in PH Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen, 2nd left, celebrates with teammate Erik Lamela and Harry Kane, right, after scoring his side’s second goal during the Champions League, round of 16, first-leg soccer match between Juventus and Tottenham Hotspurs, at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, Italy, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018. Germany initiates move at EU to list Masood Azhar as global terrorist

first_imgNew Delhi: Germany has initiated a move at the European Union to designate Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist, days after China blocked a bid at the United Nations to ban him, diplomatic sources said. They said Germany was in touch with several member-nations of the European Union to list Azhar as a terrorist which will result in his travel ban as well as freezing of his assets in the 28-country bloc. Germany has floated a proposal to ban Azhar by the European Union, but no resolution on the issue has been moved yet, diplomatic sources said Tuesday. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details They said all 28 member-countries of the European Union will have to support the move to ban the Pakistan-based terrorist as the bloc decides on such issues under the principle of consensus. On March 15, France imposed financial sanctions on Azhar and said it will work with its European partners to put the JeM chief’s name on the EU list of persons and entities involved in terrorist acts. The decision by France came two days after China put a hold on a fresh move to designate Azhar a global terrorist by the Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council. Morocco Israeli Rents Beach Prevents Locals from Access

first_imgRabat- According to Moroccan daily newspaper, Al Massaa, an Israeli advertising producer rented the beach of Safi to film sports scenes and prevented local citizens from having access for three days.Windsurfers, kite surfers and recreation lovers were disappointed when they arrived at the famous, recognized surf spot on Safi beach, only to find it surrounded by barriers and police officers who banned them from entering the beach facilities. The seashore was covered with huge spotlights, cameras and other film equipment, when the Israeli advertising producer rented the beach for three successive days to film surf scenes for international television and sports magazines. The local marine sports associations denounced the closure of the beach as a seizure by the Israeli producer without an authorization from the local Safi authorities. In a statement to the same source, officials said that the municipality of Safi had not authorized the use of spotlights, and that it did not know about the Israeli citizen’s actions.Aware of the wind conditions at the location, the Israeli, who is of Lebanese descent, comes frequently to Safi and closes the beach to the local population in order to film surf scenes.Located north of Safi, the surf spot of Sidi Bouzid is an international standard point-break for surfers. Regular, fast and powerful, its waves are ranked among the top 10 in the world.Edited by Elisabeth Myers© Morocco World News. All Rights Reserved.
