India facing healthy headache, reserves going to be key at the World Cup: MSK Prasad

first_imgChairman of India’s senior selection committee, MSK Prasad said India are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting the final 15-member squad for the 2019 World Cup, starting May 30 in England and Wales.Prasad, speaking to India Today, said India have a healthy headache and insisted that taking a call on two or three spots that are still up for grabs is going to be crucial with regards to picking a balanced squad.India are playing a five-match ODI series against Australia, which is their final international assignment ahead of the World Cup. With captain Virat Kohli suggesting that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 performances are not going to make a huge difference, the upcoming ODIs are going to play a key role when it comes to identifying players for the remaining spots.Notably, KL Rahul, who broke returned to the senior national team after serving out a suspension over the Koffee with Karan controversy, impressed the team management with his performances in the recently-concluded two-match T20I series against Australia.Nonetheless, both Rahul and young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant didn’t get to make the playing XI in the first ODI. With Dinesh Karthik being left out of the ODI squad, it remains to be seen if Pant will be given opportunities in the upcoming matches. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya’s injury has given Vijay Shankar more time to prove his mettle and seal a World Cup berth.”Well, I can clearly say we are having a healthy headache, spoiled for choice. We need to strike the balance. This is a mega event, and we want to win the World Cup. So that is where those two-three slots are going to be very crucial,” Prasad said.advertisementThe former India player added: “It’s going to be a long, long tournament. We need to pick the right XI, strike the right balance. What is more important is our players have to be fit for the next 45 days and after the IPL. These are the things that we need to keep in mind.”I don’t foresee the same playing XI playing all the matches. We will have ro rotate some of the players. That’s why the reserves are also going to be crucial in this World Cup.”Flexibility key for India at the World Cup: Sunil GavaskarMeanwhile, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said the selection committee, headed by Prasad, should keep the balance of the team in mind before announcing the final 15.Gavaskar opined 12 players more or less pick themselves in the squad and the competition over the next 30-45 days is going to be for the remaining two or three spots.”Tough [to name the 15] at the moment. I would really like to see what happens in these five ODIs and the T20 matches in the IPL… see how players react to pressure situations and then make the call. It’s always the next two, three places where there is going to be a little bit of competition,” Gavaskar told India Today. He added: “I think you have to look at the balance of the team all the time. That will be one of the prime considerations for the selection committee. Whether they need a fourth seamer or they’re going to say ‘look Hardik Pandya can do the job of the fourth seamer’. All those factors will probably be considered. It’s too early to say but, I think over the next month or so, these things will come through.”And giving the captain and the team management the options and the flexibility to pick a side according to the opposition is key. With some sides, you might need to play an extra seamer, with some sides an extra spinner. These are the things that they should keep in mind before announcing the final 15.”Also Read | India vs Australia: Usman Khawaja marvels MS Dhoni’s ability to stay calm in run chasesAlso Read | Lean, mean pace machine: Virat Kohli poses with Mohammed Shami ahead of Nagpur ODIAlso See:last_img read more
