NFL says player concussions in 2018 regular season fell 29 percent

first_imgIt will take more than one season’s worth of data to determine whether the year-over-year pattern proves to be an actual trend. NFL players suffered almost a third fewer concussions in the 2018 regular season, the league reported Thursday (via NFL.com), potential anecdotal evidence that rules changes implemented for this season resulted in the desired result. The numbers, released Thursday by the NFL, show a 29 percent decrease in concussions from 2017 to 2018. There were 135 diagnosed player concussions in 2018, down from 190 the regular season before. There were other factors that may have contributed, beyond the point of emphasis in rules changes. For example, some 74 percent of NFL players this season were using more technologically advanced helmets, a jump from 41 percent in 2017 and a number that will increase again in 2019 because the league will ban the poorest performing helmet models, based on statistical analysis.According to the league, the number of in-game sideline concussion evaluations remained high, at 538, although 75 percent of those evaluations did not result in a concussion diagnoses. The news comes after league rules put in place last offseason that moved to prevent initiating contact with the helmet and mitigate potential head injuries on kickoffs after a spike in concussions in 2017.”We’re certainly pleased with the progress on concussion reduction,” league executive VP for health and safety Jeff Miller said. “There is a lot more work to do.” Related News Raiders QB Derek Carr challenges ‘First Take’ hosts to fightlast_img read more

Golf in England is more accessible than ever

first_img Golf clubs in England are more accessible and inclusive than ever before, according to new research.Feedback from England Golf’s 2012 Golf Club Membership Questionnaire shows that clubs are becoming increasingly flexible and customer-focused as they strive to attract new golfers and to recruit and retain members. The main findings of the research are highlighted in the Results Booklet, which  includes information and ideas for golf clubs. The survey also helps England Golf to direct national strategy and to show where resources will be best used in future.Richard Flint, England Golf’s Development Manager, said: “These are very difficult times for golf clubs, both in terms of the economy and overcoming the effects of the wettest summer for 100 years. But, it is encouraging to see clubs responding to these challenges in creative and imaginative ways and putting their customers at the heart of everything they do.“England Golf is here to support golf clubs and we urge clubs to take advantage of this and to work with their County Golf Partnership (CGP) to recruit and retain members.”Altogether,  81% of clubs which have maintained or increased their membership figures over the last two years are working with their County Golf Partnership and/or are involved in England Golf programmes. In total, 25% of golf clubs which responded to the questionnaire have experienced an increase in members in the last two years. This is despite an overall drop in membership nationwide. England Golf will be examining these golf clubs in more detail to establish how they are achieving success.According to the research, more golf clubs are offering a range of membership categories, including flexible, corporate, student and intermediate. They are adopting a wider range of initiatives to attract members and increasingly working with their County Golf Partnerships to recruit and retain players. Over the past four years, the CGP network has introduced more than 154,000 people to golf, with 4200 memberships reported to date.Clubs are also becoming more innovative in their promotion and marketing, with a marked growth in the use of social media alongside established communication.Almost all clubs which responded (94%) have membership vacancies and a growing number of clubs are abandoning entrance fees. More clubs are also staggering fees over the transition period from junior to adult ranks. The encouraging trends are also reflected within clubs’ junior sections. More clubs (62%) now have a Child Welfare Officer – highlighting the importance of safeguarding within the golf club environment.More clubs are doing away with specific demands around junior playing standards and course restrictions, demonstrating that U18s are increasingly seen as an integral part of the club. This is reflected by the number of clubs – now 600 – which have achieved the GolfMark Award from England Golf in recognition of their junior and beginner friendly facilities. In addition, a growing number of clubs now allow juniors to play in all adult/main competitions. Almost all clubs (97%) offer group junior coaching and this is increasingly available to both members and non-members.The 2012 Golf Club Membership Questionnaire was returned by 40% (777) of affiliated golf clubs. 16 Jan 2013 Golf in England is more accessible than ever last_img read more

Smosh: The Once & Future Kings Of YouTube

first_img9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… fruzsina eordogh 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People… Related Posts It’s All About The UnderwearPart of Padilla and Hecox’s long standing success on YouTube – besides making content for minors – is heavily related to how they pander to young teen girls, aka fangirls. (Higa and Shane Dawson also appeal to this demographic.) The YouTube community often reacts negatively to women and girls who flaunt their sex appeal, but seems to approve of men dancing around topless in their briefs. At last year’s unofficial YouTuber’s conference – VidCon – Padilla and Hecox’s booth featured them in their underwear. The crowd of girls they attracted was in serious danger of hyperventilating. Despite corporate YouTube’s best efforts, viewers under 18 still rule the video-sharing site, relying on it not just for entertainment and music, but for news as well.  Hence, Smosh’s dominance.  Smosh was acquired by new media network Alloy Digital in 2011.Photo courtesy of Wikipedia Commons. 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout Tags:#online video#television#video#YouTube Top YouTuber Ray William Johnson has been dethroned as the most popular YouTuber by Smosh, the manic comedy duo comprised of Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla.  It took 6.8 million subscribers grab the crown, which Smosh achieved over the weekend.Skewing Younger! The secret to Smosh’s success? Make content for viewers under 18. Like every YouTube act that has owned the coveted #1 spot, Smosh’s YouTube content is decidedly aimed at a younger teen and tween audience. Johnson, who riffs jokes on viral videos pre-Tosh.0 and also runs the popular animated channel Your Favorite Martian, has held the title of most-subscribed YouTuber since June 28, 2011.  Johnson’s content is less teen friendly than that of Smosh or Asian vlogger Ryan Higa (Higa held the top YouTube spot before Johnson) but his audience is still decidedly underage.  Reclaiming Their ThroneSmosh’s ascent to the top is actually a reclaiming of the throne –  the duo held the #1 spot back in 2006, before YouTube became the do-it-yourself micro-Hollywood it is today.“[C]ongrats to SMOSH for being #1 on youtube” tweeted longtime YouTuber Shane Dawson over the weekend. “[T]hey prove that being a youtuber doesn’t mean you have a short shelf life & thats very inspiring!”Besides their signature channel Smosh, which averages 4 million views per video (be it a skit or them joking while driving), the 25-year-old Hecox and Padilla operate seven other YouTube channels including the insanely fast-growing Smosh Games (focused on – you guess it – video games), the news and entertainment show SmoshPit Weekly, El Smosh, which is SmoshPit Weekly in Spanish, and Shut Up! Cartoons, which was partially funded by Google as part of its original content initiative. The duo even has their own bobble-head dolls – so you know they must be big time.Padilla began building Smosh’a new-media empire back in 2002 with the creation of Smosh.com, a Huffington Post-style aggregator of funny Internet stuff. The first video featuring the duo hit YouTube in 2005 and happened to be a lip dub of the Pokemon theme song Gotta Catch ‘Em All. It went viral, with 24 million views (which was huge in 2005) before it was removed for “copyright infringement.”last_img read more
