Oseltamivir is the raw material for Tamiflu, which is often used to treat COVID-19 patients. Arya added that Bio Farma had also ordered 1 ton of chloroquine that will also be used to help treat patients infected with the pneumonia-like illness.Other than procuring the necessary medicine to treat the illness, he also said that several SOEs would soon produce 200 ventilators that would be used for patients in mild and critical conditions.“The ventilator prototypes from several universities and companies are still being tested by the Health Ministry. Once the test is finished, SOEs will be ready to produce them,” he said.Read also: Indonesia waives import levies for COVID-19 antivirus development, allocates Rp 1t for medical needs Several state-owned firms like weapons producer PT Pindad, electronics producer PT LEN and aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia have announced plans to convert some of their production lines to produce ventilators.Research and Technology Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro also said on a separate occasion that Indonesia could have its first locally made ventilators by April 25.“PT Indofarma has agreed to take the ventilators and become the offtaker for them,” said Arya, referring to Bio Farma’s subsidiary. The government is easing trade requirements for businesses importing medical equipment and medicine needed to handle the pandemic.”We have also eliminated the import duty for medicines paid by the government,” Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said on March 16.The same will be done for medical aid and COVID-19 testing devices sent by other countries, she added.Topics :last_img read more

LETTERKENNY GENERAL A&E ‘IN DANGER’ SAY SINN FEIN TDs

first_imgA LACK of junior doctors at Letterkenny General could cause a crisis there within days, the county’s two TDs said today. In a joint statement, Donegal Sinn Féin TDs, Pearse Doherty and Pádraig Mac Lochlainn have appealed to the Minister for Health, James Reilly to urgently intervene and ensure that additional Non Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs or Junior Doctors) are immediately appointed to the county’s main hospital. The Donegal Deputies said that it is their understanding that unless there is an immediate solution, the Accident and Emergency Department may be in danger of downgrading. Deputy Pearse Doherty said: “I challenged the Taoiseach and Minister for Health in the Dáil to publicly state what are the small rural hospitals that the Minister is referring to when he states that some will not be able to operate safely as a 24 hour A&E service as a result of the shortage of junior doctors.“The Minister refused to answer my question and indeed the persistent questioning by the Sinn Féin team over the last number of weeks on this issue”.He went on: “It is our understanding that the services of Letterkenny General Hospital will be seriously impacted as a result of the lack of junior doctors and in particular within the A&E Department.“Unless there is an immediate solution to this problem, the people of Donegal will have to endure a serious curtailment of services across a number of departments with a clear emphasis on A&E. “The Minister has already signalled that a number of hospitals will not be able to deliver a safe 24 hour accident and emergency service during the summer.”GUARANTEE NEEDED IN DAILThe TDs said their focus is to ensure that Letterkenny General is not one of the hospitals that he refers to.Said Padraig MacLochlainn: “We will be raising this yet again today in the Dáil chamber. The Minister must now make a clear statement on this matter which alleviates the concerns of the people of Donegal”This is the latest controversy surrounding the hospital which has been overspending by up to a quarter of a millon euros every week. Life Pocket eases organ donation

first_imgCaroline Wambui with her technology teacher Damaris Mutati. (Image: OMG Voice)The death of her uncle was the catalyst and after being introduced to IT by her teacher, Kenyan teen Caroline Wambui has been on a mission to help ease organ donation in her country. Her uncle died because doctors could not find a kidney donor for him as Kenya does not have a national organ donor programme.Wambui – with minimal coding skills – has now developed Life Pocket, a mobile app that connects patients to organ donors, doctors and hospitals.“I firmly believe that Africa is going to be very far in a few years because of tech and how young people of today have turned to it to change life in our communities and countries,” she said.Technology could be a powerful tool if it was used to become a channel for change, especially in poor countries. The Life Pocket app will be rolled out nationally in Kenya in October.LEARNING THE SKILLSIn 2012, Wambui’s teacher, Damaris Mutati, started introducing technology into her classes at Embakasi Girls Secondary School, following her participation in the Intel Teach programme. It was here that Mutati was training to share her new digital literacy and skills, using the Intel Learn Easy Steps curriculum. She began to teach coding to the girls in her classes.“When you empower a young girl with tech skills, you broaden the way she thinks about herself,” Mutati said. “Tech also offers girls solutions while they’re still in school, so they come out knowing how to be job creators instead of job seekers, which is very important for African youths.”HOW THE APP WORKSWambui set out to develop an easy-to-use app on which users can easily register either as donors, patients, doctors or institutions, such as the Kidney and Lupus Foundation of Kenya and the Kenya Blood Transfusion Services. It features a login page, an about the app section, a donations page to identify and collect tissue and organs, and a feedback page for people who want to become donors.“I can’t wait for the app to be rolled out. It’s overwhelming and exciting,” she said.ORGAN DONATION IN KENYAOrgan donation is legal in Kenya but only blood relatives are allowed to donate organs to those in need. Exceptions are made for married couples, so long as they can prove that they are legally married. But in special circumstances, where tissues from potential donors do not match those of recipients, organs can be sought from people not related to the patient.“Thorough background checks are conducted to ensure that the organ is given voluntarily by the donor without any expectation of cash or other favours from the recipient,” said Valentine Imonje, CEO of the National Kidney Foundation of Kenya.Awareness is needed to demystify myths and misconceptions that hold people back from donating kidneys, eyes, livers and corneas, among others.“The app also demystifies organ donation. In Kenya, people get buried with their organs,” Mutati said.last_img read more

Patriots make 3rd straight Super Bowl, beat Chiefs 37-31 OT

first_imgUS judge bars Trump’s health insurance rule for immigrants Lacson backs proposal to elect president and vice president in tandem “We put ourselves in position to win the game, that’s what makes it so tough,” Reid said. “If it’s a rout, you chalk it up to experience. But this one right here, where you’re in it to win it, that’s a tough deal. We gave ourselves every opportunity to do it, and they got us in overtime.”The Chiefs hadn’t been blanked in any half this season, but they barely were a presence in the first 30 minutes, when they had the ball for 8:53. Mahomes was sacked three times for 43 yards; Kansas City’s record-setting attack ran only 16 plays and gained a mere 32 yards. The zero disappeared quickly in the third quarter. Finally given solid protection, Mahomes unleashed a 54-yard completion to Sammy Watkins over All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore. He then hit another All-Pro, tight end Travis Kelce, on a slant to make it 14-7 — and awaken the slumbering crowd. But one of several bad decisions further damaged Kansas City when Tyreek Hill, the All-Pro flex player, retreated deep in Chiefs territory returning a punt. Eventually, KC had to punt and the Patriots had excellent field position, setting up a 47-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski. Not one to be shy about innovation, Mahomes completely sidearmed a throw to Watkins for 10 yards on a third down, then a dump-off to Williams covered 33. Kelce drew a pass interference call on J.C. Jackson in the end zone, and Mahomes threw a strike to Williams for the score.Although the Chiefs were on their heels much of the night, they were down only 17-14.LOPSIDED FIRST HALFJust as they did last week in manhandling the Chargers early and cruising, the Patriots delivered a message — and a touchdown — on their first series. It was a classic, covering 80 yards in 15 plays and using up more than eight minutes. Michel, who had 113 yards rushing, scored from the 1.But Brady made a rare mistake on the next dominant drive. His third-down pass from the 1 for Rob Gronkowski was short and Reggie Ragland picked it off.Brady had never thrown an interception from the 1. Oil plant explodes in Pampanga town “This is crazy,” said Brady, who was 30 of 46 for 348 yards. “What a game.”It’s the first time both conference title games went to OT. The last time both visitors won conference championship matches was 2012; New England was 3-5 on the road this season.“We knew what our record was, but we didn’t let that dictate us,” said defensive end Trey Flowers, who led a staunch charge on Patrick Mahomes. “Whatever happened in the regular season happened. We came out and did it when it counted.”Several times, the Patriots appeared to have it won, only to see Kansas City (13-5) come back in spectacular fashion.Brady, at 41 already the oldest quarterback to have played in a Super Bowl, drove New England 65 yards in 1:24 to Burkhead’s go-ahead 4-yard touchdown with 39 seconds left in regulation. That was enough, though, for his far younger counterpart, the 23-year-old All-Pro Mahomes, to take the Chiefs 48 yards to Harrison Butker’s 39-yard field goal with 8 seconds left to force overtime.ADVERTISEMENT When the Chiefs finally got a trademark big play on Mahomes’ 42-yard completion to Hill, it went for naught. Mahomes overthrew a wide-open Williams near the end zone, then took a 14-yard sack to send KC out of field goal range.Big mistake. The Patriots kept dominating the line of scrimmage, Brady took them 90 yards and connected with Phillip Dorsett over sloppy coverage by Steven Nelson to make it 14-0 with 27 seconds left in the half.STATSIn Week 6, the Patriots beat the Chiefs 43-40 in a game featuring 946 yards total offense. This one had 814. … New England has played in eight straight AFC title games, but this is its first road playoff win since the 2006 season vs. San Diego. … Brady matched former Patriots K Adam Vinatieri, now with the Colts, for the most wins in NFL history (236). … Kansas City’s defense tied for first in the NFL with 52 sacks, but had none on Sunday. New England had four.COIN TOSSReid’s decision to defer after winning the opening coin toss proved unwise as New England had 22 plays in the opening period, and Kansas City had seven. Then, the Chiefs lost the more important toss before overtime. Less than five minutes later, they were headed to the offseason.UP NEXTThe Patriots head to Atlanta to play the Rams in the Super Bowl. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s the dead of winter, meaning the weather in New England can be brutal. And that the Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl.It took them overtime and more of Tom Brady’s brilliance to get there — for the third straight year. While the folks back home dealt with a frigid storm, Brady blew through Kansas City’s exhausted defense on a 75-yard drive to Rex Burkhead’s 2-yard touchdown run in a 37-31 victory Sunday for the AFC championship.ADVERTISEMENT Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next It was a sizzling offensive showing in the fourth quarter after defense had been in charge most of the way. Indeed, the Chiefs were blanked in the opening half for the first time all season. And they never saw the ball in overtime, which along with the two replay decisions might call into play NFL rules and officiating.“I thought if we got the chance,” Mahomes said, “we’d score.”Mahomes finished 16 of 31 for 295 yards and three touchdowns.New England became the third franchise to reach three Super Bowls in a row. And Belichick now has 30 postseason victories, more than Bill Walsh and Don Shula combined. That Hall of Fame coaching duo also won five Super Bowls; Belichick shoots for No. 6 in two weeks. An apparent muff by the usually reliable Julian Edelman on a fourth-quarter punt return was overturned by a lengthy video review, prompting raucous booing and some demonstrative arguing from the usually laid-back Andy Reid. Edelman definitely touched his next try when Brady’s pass deflected off his hands directly to safety Daniel Sorensen. His 22-yard return set up Kansas City at the Patriots 23, and Damien Williams, who scored three times, had no defender near him down the left sideline for the score that made it 21-17, KC’s first lead.Back came Brady, engineering a 75-yard march on which Chris Hogan’s diving one-handed catch on third down appeared to touch the ground. Reid challenged — and lost.Minutes later, rookie Sony Michel scored from the 10, his second TD of the night. With 3½ minutes remaining, there was plenty of time for more points. Williams’ 2-yard run gave the Chiefs a 28-24 edge that New England took up most of the remaining time overcoming. The Patriots were helped by an offside call on linebacker Dee Ford that negated an interception which would have clinched a KC victory.Butker’s field goal sent it to overtime. Morocco Israeli Rents Beach Prevents Locals from Access

first_imgRabat- According to Moroccan daily newspaper, Al Massaa, an Israeli advertising producer rented the beach of Safi to film sports scenes and prevented local citizens from having access for three days.Windsurfers, kite surfers and recreation lovers were disappointed when they arrived at the famous, recognized surf spot on Safi beach, only to find it surrounded by barriers and police officers who banned them from entering the beach facilities. The seashore was covered with huge spotlights, cameras and other film equipment, when the Israeli advertising producer rented the beach for three successive days to film surf scenes for international television and sports magazines. The local marine sports associations denounced the closure of the beach as a seizure by the Israeli producer without an authorization from the local Safi authorities. In a statement to the same source, officials said that the municipality of Safi had not authorized the use of spotlights, and that it did not know about the Israeli citizen’s actions.Aware of the wind conditions at the location, the Israeli, who is of Lebanese descent, comes frequently to Safi and closes the beach to the local population in order to film surf scenes.Located north of Safi, the surf spot of Sidi Bouzid is an international standard point-break for surfers. Regular, fast and powerful, its waves are ranked among the top 10 in the world.Edited by Elisabeth Myers© Morocco World News. All Rights Reserved.
