first_imgThe successful 55-yard field goal came at the end of the first half.Plenty of leg from the rook on NFL kick No. 1.#GoBucs | #TBvsPIT pic.twitter.com/PDabRUOBNS— Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@Buccaneers) August 10, 2019The rookie kicker was shocked when he found out about the record, but then came to the unfortunate realization this feat was accomplished during the preseason.“Really?” Gay told Buccaneers.com after the game. “Wow. That’s awesome. That’s cool to know. I don’t know if that would count because it’s preseason, but that’s cool to know. It’s awesome.”Gay’s kick beat the 53-yarder from former Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey in 2016.Gay, a fifth-round pick out of Utah in this year’s draft, is competing against Cairo Santos for the starting nod in the regular season.  “It’s all about games,” coach Bruce Arians recently said about the kicking competition. “It’s not what you do in practice. It’s about what you do in games. Heinz Field is going to be one heck of a place to test them.”The long field goal certainly doesn’t hurt Gay’s chances. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t have much to celebrate Friday night, falling 30-28 to the Steelers, but Matt Gay likely won’t forget the game.On Gay’s first NFL kick, he booted the longest field goal in Heinz Field’s 18-year history.last_img read more
