Iconic holiday parade canceled

first_imgHOLLYWOOD – Go ahead, pout and cry. Santa Claus won’t be coming to town. After 75 years featuring the best Tinseltown had to offer, the Hollywood Christmas Parade has been canceled. Organizers said dwindling attendance, poor sponsor support and a dearth of A-list talent made the $1 million annual effort too much of a financial strain on the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “That sucks,” said Abby Jaime, 19, of Pico Rivera outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, upon hearing the news. Jaime has attended several of the annual parades with her family and watched it on television when she couldn’t attend. “I loved the (marching) bands,” Jaime said. “And seeing all the celebrities, the ambiance.” Held the first Sunday after Thanksgiving, the parade was created in 1928 to draw Los Angeles residents to the Hollywood area during the holiday shopping season. In the parade’s heyday, hundreds of thousands of fans came out to see golden era stars such as Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Bob Hope and Mary Pickford serve as grand marshals. Through the years, millions more watched on local and national television broadcasts. Over the past decade, organizers said, the parade lost money about half the time as the chamber struggled to secure advertising dollars and a television contract needed to guarantee celebrity participation. “We’ve been looking to save this parade for 10 years,” said Leron Gubler, Hollywood chamber president and CEO. “The outlook has looked shaky all that time. We’ve explored every option possible. We always had hoped to turn it around. For us, it’s very sad to have to make this announcement.” [email protected] (818) 713-3329last_img read more
