first_imgGuyanese women open on winning note, men suffer mixed fortunesGUYANA’S campaign at the 61st Senior Caribbean Table Tennis Championships, here on home soil at Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), served off to different starts yesterday for the Women and Men’s teams respectively.Playing in two matches, the Guyanese women took away maximum points and sit top of the table with four points heading into today’s action.In the first session of play during the morning, the Guyanese women faced Martinique and steamrolled them, winning 3-0. First Natalie ‘Speedy’ Cummings teamed up with Chelsea Edghill against Oceane Meredin and Mevena Avril and the Guyanese duo dispatched their opponents in straight sets of 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 before Trenace Lowe made it 2-0, Team Guyana defeating Armelle Pruvost 11-3, 8-11, 11-5, 11-3.Edghill then handed Guyana maximum points from the fixture by beating Mevena Avril in straight sets of 11-4, 11-5, 11-6.Guyana’s next victims were Barbados, who suffered a 0-3 loss. In the doubles match-up, Cummings and Edghill once again teamed up to devastating effect, condemning Anthonette Riley and Krystle Harvey to sets of 5-11, 11-3, 11-3, 7-11, 11-8 while Lowe chipped in with an 11-6, 18-20, 13-11 and 13-11 win over Janae Lewis.Once again Edghill put the icing on the cake, defeating Harvey in three identical sets of 11-3 to leave the Guyanese girls sitting pretty in pole position with four points. They will face possibly their toughest opponents, the Dominican Republic, today along with Jamaica.However, the Guyanese men did not have the same dream start, facing powerhouse Dominican Republic as they went down 3-0. First Joel Alleyne and Christopher Franklin surrendered in the doubles match by sets of 8-11, 8-11, 6-11 to the Dominican duo of Emil Santos and Isaac Vila.Meanwhile, Shemar Britton showed a bit of a fight against Mariano Lockward but also went down in three straight sets of 8-11, 8-11, 4-11, Franklin was the last casualty of the Dominican encounter conceding defeat to Vila in sets of 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 3-11.In their second game of the day, the Guyanese men rebounded with a 3-0 win over St Lucia. Up to press time the detailed scores of that game were yet to be made available to the media. After discussing it with Frank, the decision was reached mutually to part ways. In winning two trophies in his first season in charge, he will always be a part of the club’s history, and with great appreciation and respect we wish him all the best in the future,” Eales added.Former Dutch international De Boer was announced as the club’s head coach in December 2018. Atlanta United finished the 2019 MLS season in second place in the Eastern Conference.But in the ongoing MLS is Back tournament, the team was knocked out of the round of 16 after losing all three matches in the group stage without scoring. “I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had with Atlanta United,” De Boer said. “Coaching in Major League Soccer and living in Atlanta has been a wonderful experience and a welcome new challenge. I will never forget the incredible supporters here in Atlanta, they are truly special. England stars target success after Quinta do Lago camps

first_img England Golf’s leading amateur stars will have high hopes of hitting the ground running in their quest for major honours in 2016 after taking part in the first training camps of the winter at Quinta do Lago in Portugal. Members of the England Men’s and Men’s ‘A’ squads who gathered at the prestigious Algarve resort included Bradley Moore and Alfie Plant – both ranked in Europe’s top ten. The visits provided the opportunity to fine-tune their swings and enjoy the award-winning venue’s array of five-star facilities as part of Quinta do Lago’s role as the winter training base for England Golf’s national squads. In addition to working on technique, activities for the players during the week-long camps included sessions on fitness, the short game, ball-flight control, game management and the mental side of the game. Paul Ashwell, coach of the England Men’s A Squad, said: “The players really enjoyed the beautiful weather and excellent practice facilities and were especially impressed with the North Course following its recent remodelling. We are all looking forward to returning for our next visit in March!” Featuring three 18-hole championship courses, outstanding practice facilities at its Paul McGinley Academy, a TaylorMade Performance Centre and extensive leisure activities and facilities, Quinta do Lago has everything needed to guarantee a first-class golf experience. Quinta do Lago has been the official winter venue for hosting England Golf’s squad since 2014. Both men’s squads are set to return to the resort for a second winter training break in March, while the women’s, boys’ and girls’ squads will also enjoy the facilities on camps in the run-up to the start of the 2016 season. In addition, each group uses the swing analysis with a launch monitor and has biomechanics golf fitness training sessions. The England Golf National Performance Programme supports more than 40 of the best amateur players within the England national squads and almost 200 players within regional squads. Previous players include some of the world’s leading golfers, such as Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Charley Hull and Melissa Reid.
