UK orders review into potentially unreliable England COVID-19 death data

first_imgTopics : Britain’s health minister Matt Hancock has ordered a review into how deaths from coronavirus are reported in England after academics said the daily figures may be unreliable and include people who have died of other causes, an official said. The government official, who asked not to be named, said an announcement of the review might be announced later on Friday. The way Public Health England, a government agency responsible for managing infectious disease outbreaks, calculates the figures in England means they might look worse than in other parts of the United Kingdom, according to two academics. Yoon Loke, from the University of East Anglia, and Carl Heneghan, from the University of Oxford, said Public Health England cross-checks the latest notifications of deaths against a database of positive test results – so anyone who has tested positive can be recorded as dying from the virus. In a blog called “Why no-one can recover from COVID-19 in England”, the academics said that patients who tested positive for COVID, but are successfully treated, will still be counted as dying from the virus if they have a heart attack or are run over by a bus three months later. The Department for Health and Social Care did not have any immediate comment. last_img read more

Agreement Signed for Wisconsin Shoreline Stabilization Project

first_imgThe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, and Wisconsin’s Village of Colfax signed a project partnership agreement July 3, to stabilize around 1,300 feet of shoreline along the Red Cedar River. The purpose of the project is to keep wastewater from the Colfax Waste Water Treatment Plant from entering the Red Cedar River.Erosion has cut the bank to within 50 feet of the wastewater treatment lagoon berm, which is the barrier between the lagoon and the river.According to USACE, severe safety and environmental impacts would occur if erosion continued and wastewater from the lagoon entered the river. The project, covered under the Corps’ emergency stream bank protection program, will include placing around 6,000 tons of rock riprap to create a stable slope. The project has a total cost of approximately $1.7 million, of which $1 million will be federally funded through the Corps of Engineers. It is anticipated construction will be complete by the end of 2021.last_img read more

Today’s Daily Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Best starting pitchers, streamers for Tuesday, June 18

first_imgTuesday’s daily SP rankings feature a trio of bankable former Cy Young winners at the top, but you’re going to be limiting your offensive budget if you take any of them. Fortunately for those looking to save a few bucks for hitters, there are plenty of value sleepers in MLB DFS contests. Jack Flaherty (vs. Marlins) is relatively affordable and should be highly owned given his matchup, and Jake Arrieta (@ Nationals) is also in a good spot based on the stat splits. If you’re willing to accept a slightly lower ceiling, you can get great deals on Yusei Kikuchi (vs. Royals), Brett Anderson (vs. Orioles), and Ryan Yarbrough (@ Yankees), especially on DraftKings. Watch ChangeUp, a new MLB live whip-around show on DAZNThere aren’t a lot of obvious fades based on matchups, though David Price (@ Twins) and Patrick Corbin (vs. Phillies) seem slightly overpriced. Check the Fantasy Alarm Weather Center closer to lineup lock for the latest weather reports. League average for position players is 100, and every point above 100 is a percentage point above league average. For example, a 125 wRC+ means a player created 25% more runs than a league average hitter would have in the same number of plate appearances. Similarly, every point below 100 is a percentage point below league average, so a 80 wRC+ means a player created 20% fewer runs than league average.” For more on the stat, click here.last_img read more
