PNP assures no human rights abuses under Anti-Terror Bill

first_imgAny person who shall threaten to commit any act of terrorism, propose any terroristic acts or incite others to commit terrorism shall suffer the penalty of 12 years in prison under the bill. “May mga pangamba ang ating kababayan sa batas na iyan pero ito po ay para sa mga pinaghihinalaang terorista,” Banac said. “Hindi naman po agad agad isasailalim sa surveillance ang isang indibidwal. Dadaan pa po ‘yan sa masusing pag aaral.” “Magsasagawa po tayo ng information campaign para lahat ng ating pulis ay aware sa provisions ng panukalang batas,” Banac said in aninterview with DZBB. PNP spokesperson Bernard Banac said in a radio interview on Sunday that they will conduct information campaign on their police officers to ensure that the proposed measure will be implemented properly. MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has assured that policemen won’t abuse the powers under the controversial Anti-Terrorism Bill, which is now up for President Rodrigo Duterte’s signature. “Ang nais lamang po ng pamahalaan, maging ang PNP, ay mabalanse ang ating karapatan at ang pagkakaroon ng kaayusan. Kailangan mabalanse ang rights at order,” he added. The bill also removed the provision under the Human Security Act that orders the payment of half a million pesos in damages for each day that a person wrongfully accused of terrorism is detained. The proposed measure wants to extend the number of days suspected terrorists can be detained without a warrant of arrest – from three days under the current law to up to 14 days. The PNP spokesperson added that it is just right to pass the Anti-Terrorism Bill now to prevent the further prevalence of terrorism. The Senate has approved on February the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, which seeks to repeal the Human Security Act of 2007 with stronger measures to allow the government to curtail supposed acts of terror. A counterpart measure was approved by the House of Representatives on third and final reading on Wednesday night clearing the way for President Duterte’s signature./PNlast_img read more

Lukaku eager to prove worth

first_img Press Association “This year, I have a point to prove first to myself, that I can do it again, and then to Chelsea, to show that I can be number one over there as well. “I had a few talks with the manager (Mourinho) about playing regularly and the importance of it, because I couldn’t afford another season on the bench or maybe playing one time out of three, at my age and especially with the World Cup coming up. “So I spoke with him a few times to see his vision and at a certain point I thought going on loan again was the best thing to do. “It was my choice. I want to play as much as possible. “I don’t want people to just remember the Romelu Lukaku of West Brom and for me to be in the background again.” Asked if he still saw a future for himself at Chelsea, Lukaku said: “I don’t know. “I think if I can do similar to last year, but for a club like Everton and with better statistics, why not? But we’ll see at the end of the season. “It was always my main ambition to go back to Chelsea, but the end of the season is when you can have a balanced view of how things have gone and make a final decision.” “You always need confirmation after a good year,” Lukaku said. “After only one good year, if you then have a down year the next year, people never take you seriously. “I want to become a better player – a much better player, not just the same player as people know from last year. “I hope that at the end of this season people say, ‘Romelu Lukaku is one of the best in this league’.” It had been widely expected Lukaku would feature prominently this season for Chelsea, whom he signed for from Anderlecht in August 2011. But Lukaku says conversations he had with the London outfit’s manager Jose Mourinho about his first-team prospects helped convince him he would be best off going out on loan again. And asked if he felt he had a point to prove, Lukaku said: “Yes, because I think after last year, I deserve a chance – like I did the year before, before I went to West Brom. “I thought I deserved that chance, I went to West Brom on loan and did well. Everton’s new on-loan striker Romelu Lukaku is determined that he will not go down as a one-season wonder in English football. Lukaku emerged as a real force in the Barclays Premier League last term, scoring 17 goals while on loan at West Brom from Chelsea for the campaign. The 20-year-old Belgium international joined the Toffees in a similar deal on transfer deadline day earlier this month and is looking to make a major impact once again in 2013-14. last_img read more

Paddy Power: Sinn Féin surge sees coalition uncertainty

first_img StumbleUpon Share Bookies Corner: Trump Presidency sinks as US 2020 enters its 100 day countdown July 29, 2020 Share Submit Flutter moves to refine merger benefits against 2020 trading realities August 27, 2020 Related Articles The Irish gambling landscape is set to face some major changes in the coming months, but what has been a surprise to many is the mass seat gains of Sinn Féin.Speaking to Joe Lee, Head of Political Betting at Paddy Power, he explained that punters are backing a second general election before the end of the year, while a Fianna Fail, Sinn Féin and Green Party coalition is currently a punter favourite._______________________Joe Lee – Paddy PowerSinn Féin seems to have shocked much of the electorate with its significant gain in seats. Has this been the biggest political upset of 2020?Joe Lee: There’s no debating that this was an Irish political landscape game changing election but to call it the biggest political upset of 2020 might be a little premature considering it’s only February and we’ll have the US going to the polls in a Presidential Election in November!Sinn Féin have most likely shocked themselves as much as anybody else. The fact that it decided to run only 42 candidates, securing 37 of the 160 seats, was evidence that Sinn Féin did not expect this level of success. Our early seat projections had them in the high teens or low twenties. In this election, to the surprise of many, no one party has gained an outright majority. Are punters showing any backing towards a particular coalition agreement? Or could we see a stalemate in the Dáil?JL: The last majority government in Ireland was Fianna Fail back in the ’70s, so the fact that a coalition will be required is no real surprise, however the parties that may come together could be. FF topped the seat count with 38, but that’s a long way from the ’50s where they were projected. With such a significant shift, it’s the first time in the history of the state where no two parties can come together and form a majority. With that in mind the current favourite (3/1) in terms of a coalition government is for Fianna Fail, Sinn Féin and Green Party to come together. These combined would see 87 seats and exceed the 80 required. Next most popular with punters is a substitution of the Social Democrats (a relatively new party) for the Green Party; at 7/1 there may be a little value here but the total seats wouldn’t give much wriggle room with 81.Could we see Ireland looking for another general election by the end of 2020?JL: A stalemate is a strong possibility with plenty of pundits suggesting this would be a mistake with some very important Brexit related trade deals on the horizon. But given an unclear picture and the noises coming from party members across the spectrum around early-stage negotiations to form a coalition, 5/2 about another Irish General Election in 2020 has been very popular with punters. This is not only a winner if a Government fails to be formed, but also should an unstable government come crashing down before December; a relatively strong possibility given the divided nature of this election.
