first_imgIn addition to Fort St. John, which is receiving $93,039, Dawson Creek will be allocated $120,731 and the Northern Rockies Regional District will obtain $44,402.In total, $17,112,790 from the province is being allocated to the 59 communities as required under the Municipal  Aid Act; payable from lands owned by the province, such as courthouses, provincial government office buildings and warehouses. These grants-in-lieu of property tax are distributed every November to reimburse municipalities for services that benefit aforementioned government property, like municipally run sewers, roads and fire protection.- Advertisement -Some establishments, such as schools and hospitals are exempt from paying municipal property taxes – therefore excluded from the grant-in-lieu calculation.Other provincial properties such as highways, forests, parks or land under the control, management or administration of a Crown corporation are also excluded from compensation under the Act.This years’ payment is $1.1 million less than the last year total of $18.2 million, which is said to be attributed to a number of factors, including decreases in assessed property values from B.C. Assessment, transferring ambulance stations to B.C. Emergency Health Services, as well as the provincial government no longer having a presence in some municipalities.Advertisement The funds are distributed electronically by the Ministry of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services.last_img read more
