Input sought on SA wildlife distribution

first_img22 August 2013 The Department of Environmental Affair has invited members of the public to provide their input on maps reflecting the natural distribution range of 21 indigenous wild mammal species in South Africa. The species include impala, springbok, white rhino, eland, Cape buffalo, giraffe, kudu, black wildebeest and Cape mountain zebra. The department said earlier this month that it was developing the maps in phases, with the current set of maps including 21 indigenous mammal species “that are most commonly translocated within the wildlife industry”. Translocation of the animals is regulated in terms of both provincial and national biodiversity legislation, although factors considered in evaluating permit applications often differ between provinces. The maps are therefore expected to give clarity on the natural distribution range of South Africa’s wildlife, and to help with the evalutation of permit applications. The maps were developed based on a set of predetermined principles, including the historical distribution of species, as well as vegetation types indicate the sustainability of habitats to different species. To access the template for input submissions, and for more information on the distribution maps, follow this link. Members of the public are invited to submit their input by downloading the template and returning it via e-mail to [email protected] by 31 August 2013. Source: SAnews.gov.zalast_img read more

520 Bellevue TB hotel – Geocache of the Week

first_imgThere are two things that are beloved by many geocachers: gadget caches and trackable hotels. So what’s even better? A gadget cache that’s also a trackable hotel! If you are a connoisseur of well-designed caches then our Geocache of the Week is a great fit for you. Located next to a strip mall in Bellevue, Washington, 520 Bellevue TB hotel shows how urban geocaches can be a lot more than lamp post caches and guardrail nanos. The cache owner Bounce, bounce is known in the local community for his creative trackable hotels. The cache is located in an unused loading bay. When you approach the cache you might hesitate for a second since it looks much like an electronic installment that’s part of the dock. But when you point your gaze upwards a warning sign reassures you that you’re in the right location. The cache page tells you that you need one of Bellevue’s zip codes (which are five digits) to open the cache, but the lock that stands between you and the logbook only has 4 digits. So your first mission is to identify where to use the code and then find the right one.Once you open the cache you might get sidetracked by the lights and switches. It’s fine to play with them but the cache owner requests that you leave everything the way you found it before you leave. Opening the second door gets you to the logbook and well organized trackable hotel. If you’re in the area and need a place for your travel-weary trackables, check them into this hotel for some well-deserved rest before the next geocacher takes them to their next destination.Continue to explore some of the most amazing geocaches around the world.Check out all of the Geocaches of the Week on the Geocaching blog. Sponsor Post: Meet The New Top Level Domain: .Co

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting rww sponsor 1 A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Editor’s note: we offer our long-term sponsors the opportunity to write ‘Sponsor Posts’ and tell their story. These posts are clearly marked as written by sponsors, but we also want them to be useful and interesting to our readers. We hope you like the posts and we encourage you to support our sponsors by trying out their products. This year, the newest top level domain (TLD) to be released for worldwide registration will be .co. The debate continues over ICANN’s plans to create potentially hundreds of new TLDs, and the application process for creating a new TLD continues to be delayed as a result. Meanwhile, .co has quietly snuck up on the domain community and is just months away from release. The .co TLD will provide companies with a TLD that represents “company”, which is a viable and possibly even superior alternative to .com. With the .com domain inventory nearly exhausted, .co gives businesses the opportunity to brand themselves online to the fullest extent possible. Why .Co?Besides being a great option for companies, .co can stand for community, collaboration, content, connection, or commerce. It’s a short TLD at only two characters long, which makes it that much more memorable. With the ever-increasing popularity of URL shorteners, it will also work well for creating your own branded URL shortener to allow you to control your links.MyDomain will be one of select few companies to offer .co, and pricing info will be released shortly. Be sure to check back to learn more about .co Domains, and be ready to register .co domains when they launch in order to snag the best ones. The .co TLD release will follow a fairly standard process along the lines of other recent TLD launches. The Sunrise period for .co kicks off in April and lasts through June. The global Landrush will follow in July. General Availability on a first-come, first-served basis will then begin in the third quarter of 2010. See the .co website for specific dates as the launch nears. The New TLD Release ProcessSunrise Period: This phase allows registered trademark holders to secure the exact-match domains for their trademarks secured prior to July 30, 2008. Trademark holders go through a process that includes submission of trademarks to registrars that are offering the new TLD, validation of the trademarks, auctioning if multiple trademark holders apply for the same domain, and awarding of domains.Landrush: The Landrush phase is open to everyone and lets customers pay a premium to have a chance to secure high-commercial-value domains. Domains with more than one interested party will be awarded via auction. The domains that get attention during the Landrush phase are short and memorable non-trademarked terms. For example, something like pizza.co would have high value to a pizza company. That domain has the potential to rank well in search engines and would be a fantastic addition to a company’s marketing and branding efforts.General Availability: This is the final, broad-release period when all remaining domains are available for registration. Like other currently available TLDs, .co will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to be registered at a fixed yearly cost. Most domain names are still available at the beginning of this phase, with only trademarked domains and the most valuable generic domains being claimed during the Sunrise and Landrush periods.Have a great idea for how to use a .co domain? Feel free to share it in the comments.center_img Related Posts Tags:#Sponsors#web 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Provincial government extends livestock fencing program

first_imgKAMLOOPS, B.C. — The provincial government announced last week that it is extending the Provincial Livestock Fencing Program for five more years. The government says that the program extension is part of $46 million in safety improvements approved in this year’s provincial budget. The program, which is a partnership between the provincial government and BC Cattlemen’s Association, will receive $1 million per year over the next five years. Since the program launched in 2010, the government has spent $16 million to help get more than 900 kilometres of livestock fencing erected along B.C. highways.According to information provided by the Cattleman’s Association, fatalities involving cattle on roads and railways have declined from 92 in 2011 to 21 last year. “The success of the Provincial Livestock Fencing Program in reducing livestock-related collisions on our highways makes extending it for five more years an easy decision,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claire Trevena. “There are two major benefits of the fencing program: Keeping people safe while driving, and helping ranchers protect their investment.”The BC Cattlemen’s Association will continue to administer the popular, taking applications from livestock owners who are seeking assistance to build fences adjacent to the highway. Applications are reviewed by a committee, and projects are selected based on several factors, including current fence condition, livestock headcount, and highway designation.“There is no doubt in my mind that the fencing program is responsible for the drastic reduction in the number of cattle lost to ranchers and farmers,” said Kevin Boon, general manager, BC Cattlemen’s Association. “This partnership with the Province for five more years will allow us to keep more of our livestock out of harm’s way, but more importantly, it helps keep the travelling public safe.”Applications from livestock owners are received by the BCCA, at: http://www.cattlemen.bc.ca/fencing.htm.last_img read more
